When you have known someone your entire life, it is hard to realize what it would be like to be without them. Julie had been our neighbor since I could remember. She was the nicest person ever. She would always ask me and my brother about school, always said hi, would invite us over to play with her dogs and later her kids.
I think I was in high school when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was sad, but she was a trooper. Her cancer went into remission. I had not seen her in a long time, and when I did see her, it was obvious that she was sick.
I moved away to go to college, and when I came back she was healthy again. She was the same Julie I remember. Happy.
I guess this is where my naiveté about cancer plays in. Besides Julie, I've only known one other person who had cancer. My great uncle Jose, who died last year. I guess when I hear that people's cancer has gone into remission, I think they're cured. Not thinking that it could ever come back. I know that it is not the case. As it wasn't the case with Julie.
It's hard to believe that the next time I go over to my dad's house, there will be one less friendly face.
Julie, I will never forget you.
